1. Differentiate Your Business

Unless you're the lowest cost provider, you can't compete on price. Your basic overhead demands that you sell a premium product line that differentiates your business from others

  • Cultivate unusual products
  • Maintain product line diversity
  • Provide unexpected service
  • Bind yourself to your customers
  • Develop systems to maintain quality
  • 2. Use Promotions (not "sales") to Increase Volume

    • "Sales" increase traffic but attract discount shoppers while "promotions" attract people because of product interest.
    • Sell Valentine's Day roses with a "gift coupon" for a dozen roses in July at a special price, when your cost is low and you need the traffic
    • Have a "wierd" plant "sale"
    • Do a Cactus promotion
    • Offer seasonal Porch and Patio items
    • Or just have a fun "customer appreciation" event
    • Have a free plant potting event
    • Free coffee day
    • Give something away--yes, for free!
    • Decorate window or store to reflect promotion theme
      • Cactus Promo -- Sombrero, cow skull, tumbleweeds, etc
      • Tropical Plant Promo -- Grass skirts, leis, parrots, sand, seashells, etc
      • Spring -- Pottery bench, tools, containers, etc.


    3. Fill Customers' Special Requests. "It's not a problem, it's an opportunity!"  Bring them in the 1st time and keep them coming back again and again, without spending large amounts on advertising.


    4. Improve the Power of Your Sales Floor

    • Clean, neat AND bright
    • Something different, something exciting every week.
    • Something special by the cash register
    • Have products that get them to smile; always have something fun to sell.
