When the days lengthen and the weather warms, gardeners look for plants to fill their patios and porches. The "Porch and Patio" season is one of our favorites. We carry several tried and true varieties that do well in the Patio setting. Most of them like lots of bright sun and plenty of water in the warm summer months. Most will allow you to bring them in to enjoy when things get chilly as well. Here are our favorite Porch and Patio Plants. Click on the plant name to see its Plant Profile.

CARE TIP: Before bringing your plant indoors after a warm, bright summer outside, it is a good idea to prepare it for re-entry to indoor life.

  1. The first thing to do is back off on the light a bit. It is significantly darker indoors and most plants need a few weeks of acclimation to avoid shedding leaves.
  2. The second suggestion is to get rid of any critters before bringing them inside. Use a systemic insecticide a couple of weeks early. When you are ready to bring the plant in, thoroughly wash it and saturate it with insecticidal soap spray. The Systemic will go into the plant and kill bugs from the inside out. The Insecticidal Soap will kill any pests that still reside on the plant. You will want to do a follow-up treatment in 5 - 7 days to kill anything that may have hatched.
  3. Remember to water a bit less indoors. It will not be as bright and probably not as warm as the days of summer. Your plants will appreciate a little rest. Don't kill it with too much water.
